The Dahlberg dry rocker is a manually operated, gravity separation device that does not need an engine or motor to operate it. The rocking action of the dry rocker settles the gold and other heavy material in a trough located within the dry rocker. The lighter material goes out the outlet end of the dry rocker and the heavier material containing the gold settles in the trough. The heavier material is prevented from going out the outlet by a nugget trap at the far end of the trough. Anything larger than ¼ inch in diameter remains on the grizzly screen and then rolls off when the dry rocker is rocked backward. After the dry rocker has been operated for awhile there will be a pile of rocks over ¼ inch in diameter at one end and a pile of the lighter material at the other end of the dry rocker.

The dry rocker is designed to be used with dry material. If the material being processed is damp, the lighter material and heavier material will stick together and not separate properly. If a desirable area has been found, a waterproof tarp may be placed over the location in case it should rain. Weigh the tarp down with rocks or dirt to prevent it blowing away if the wind comes up.

To operate the dry rocker, shovel the material being processed onto the grizzly screen. Then rock the dry rocker forward so that the material is pushed against the backstop at the far end of the grizzly screen and then rock the dry rocker backward . By using the dry rocker in that manner the material traverses the screen twice and is screened more thoroughly. A gentler rocking action at first settles the heavy material and then greater rocking action helps expel the lighter material.

To empty the dry rocker, it is rocked fully backward and the concentrate or heavier material containing the gold is emptied from the inlet of the dry rocker into a 16 inch diameter gold pan or other suitable container. The concentrate is panned or otherwise classified to recover the gold.

The dry rocker is 24 inches in diameter and 11 inches wide. The two sides are made of ¼ inch thick plywood. At the inlet of the dry rocker is a grizzly which consists of a ¼ inch mesh grizzly screen, a steel backstop and a grizzly chute. The material that falls through the grizzly screen drops into the grizzly chute and is directed to the inlet end of the dry rocker trough. The trough is made of thin steel. The dry rocker trough is held in place by ½ inch thick plywood trough holders. The dry rocker nugget trap is located near the outlet end of the trough.

The dry rocker may be operated with one hand if desired. It is suspended on two ball bearings and is counter- balanced . The dry rocker is very quiet. It produces less dust than most dry washers. There is no motor to start or shut down when using it. The only tools needed are two 10 inch adjustable wrenches for removing the dry rocker legs for easier transport. I prefer using a narrow-bladed garden shovel for digging in hard ground. A pick or bar may be used for breaking up very hard packed ground. The dry rocker may be emptied often or may be used for an extended period of time without emptying if desired.

The Dahlberg dry rocker can be operated in remote areas where gasoline and oil are not available. It does not require any special skill to operate. Shoveling material into it is the hardest part of the operation. It weighs about 50 pounds and may be lifted with the two handles easily. Without the legs it is 24 inches in diameter and can be transported in most vehicles. The legs are easily removed.
